A recent TEDxFIU event kicked off with Global Lake Ecology Observatory Network (GLEON) member Evelyn Gaiser’s unexpected discovery that her two passions, science and music, could come together to help her better understand data. Evelyn’s interpretation of the year-round daily temperature changes in Florida’s Lake Annie formed the basis for her TEDx talk.

Evelyn is a classically trained musician, so when she visualized the temperature data collected from Lake Annie she also saw a musical score. By assigning the data points a musical note, she composed Lake Annie’s song. The piece was then arranged by Marcus Norris and performed by Yaniv Cohen, Aryam Gonzalez and Tomas Lopez, all members of the School of Music on the TEDxFIU stage.
“Music seems uniquely suited to expressing the nuances of nature,” Gaiser said in an FIU News report about the event, noting a growing trend of scientists and musicians around the world coming together to explore the complexities of nature in this way. (more…)

A new citizen science working group formed in July at the most recent all-hands meeting of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) in Gaming and Lunz, Austria. With the official end of the Networking Lake Observatories in Europe (NETLAKE) EU COST Action this year, the working group activities under GLEON’s sister network in Europe found a new home by merging with ongoing initiatives in GLEON. What had been an adhoc group on citizen science in GLEON became a full-fledged working group this summer with several joint projects already underway.
“Experience from GLEON demonstrates how citizens contribute to the formulation of new research questions about their lakes as well as how research scientists are embracing citizen science in the network,” said Kathleen C. GLEON’s 18th All-Hands Meeting and joint meeting with NETLAKE was held from 4-8 July, 2016 in Lunz & Gaming, Austria. There were approximately 140 individuals who attended the meeting; about 60 percent of the participants were faculty, scientists, and/or staff and 40 percent were students and postdoctoral researchers. 33 countries were represented, spanning 85 institutions. The meeting consisted of a diversity of GLEONites and NETLAKE’ers, and for 40 percent of the participants, this was their first All-Hands meeting. (more…)

The Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) all-hands meeting in Lunz & Gaming, Austria is fast approaching! The host team has been busy preparing the conference site, as well as organizing the daytime and evening activities. This blog post is to give you a historical and research perspective of the conference site and let you know what to expect at GLEON 18.
Lake Lunz Background
Lake Lunz is oligotrophic lake of a glacial origin located in the small town of Lunz am See, 120 km southwest of Vienna in the foothills of Austrian limestone. Lunz am See is part of the Eisenwurzen region, which is historically famous for iron ore mining since the time of Celtic and Roman, and later Habsburg Empires. The area is also known as the coldest place in Central Europe. The lowest temperature recorded was -56.2 oC in 1932. History reveals that Lunz am See has been part of Austria since the country was founded in 976, which was later purchased and bestowed to the monastery of Gaming by Duke Albercht XI.
Lake Lunz is vernacularly called Lunzer Untersee (Lower Lake), which is due to its altitudinal relation to two small neighboring lakes, Mittelsee (Middle Lake) and Obersee (Upper Lake). Lake Lunz’s surface area is about 1 km2 with max and mean depths of 33.7 m and 20 m, respectively. The lake has approximately 27 km2 of uninhabited catchment area that consists of karstic plateau and is densely forested by Norway spruce and European beech. The area is very famous for tourism, and the main tourist attractions during summers are sport fishing, swimming, walking around the lake, hiking to the upper lakes and the famous summit peak of Dürrnstein, and skiing during winters. The 2nd Annual NE GLEON conference held at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY, from April 15-17, gave students and professors representing 11 universities and colleges in northeastern North America the opportunity to experience a “mini” version of a GLEON all-hands meeting. Although undergraduates were the focus of the weekend meeting, comprising nearly half of the 32 participants, graduate students and faculty members also gathered to share data and plan regional research activities for the coming year.
“I had the amazing opportunity to attend the regional NE GLEON conference. There were several students from various institutions with a wide array of majors, backgrounds, and interests. Although this was my second time attending a NE GLEON meeting, I was still greeted with enthusiasm, almost like being reunited with old friends,” said Brian Kim, an undergraduate student from Colby College in Maine. In spring 2013/2014, GLEONites from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres undertook a challenging spring sampling campaign called Spring Blitz. This Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) project was a coordinated effort from researchers around the world to study and link changes in water column stability to plankton diversity during the onset of stratification. Spring Blitz makes use of the GLEON network of sensors in lakes with differing stratification regimes and was the focus of several graduate student PhD theses at Lake Erken, Mt Bold Reservoir and Milltown. Currently, I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences and a fellow in the Interfaces of Global Change at Virginia Tech. Dr. Cayelan Carey, a long-term GLEONite, is my advisor, and she first introduced me to GLEON a few years ago. For my Ph.D. research, I combine field and laboratory research with ecosystem modeling to quantify how multiple environmental and human factors interact to affect plankton ecology and water quality in lakes and reservoirs. Prior to my time at Virginia Tech, I earned my B.S. and M.S. from the University of Michigan in environmental science where my research focused on planktonic food webs in the Great Lakes. (more…)

Going in to the GLEON17 meeting, I had no idea what to expect. Prior to my arrival in Korea, my only involvement with Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) had been through the fellowship program, and I wasn’t sure whether my experience led by Paul Hanson, Kathie Weathers, Hilary Dugan, and Grace Hong would be representative of the whole GLEON group. I needn’t have worried. Looking back on my first GLEON meeting, four words come to mind: welcomed, valued, engaged, and inspired. (more…)

Ten years ago, a relatively small group of lake scientists, information managers and information technology experts met in San Diego alongside experts on coral reefs in what we now consider to be the first GLEON meeting. G1, though of course none of us called it that – in fact the name GLEON didn’t yet exist – started an adventure in doing network science.
The goal of the first meeting was to explore whether developing an international network that deployed and made use of high-frequency measurements on lakes and coral reefs made sense scientifically, socially, and practically. It resulted in what we now know as the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network, or GLEON, a thriving, energetic, and creative network that has brought an international community of scientists together. But back then, we had only a dim inkling of what GLEON would become a decade later. (more…)
